Ask Our Mechanic – 2001 Skoda Octavia VRS
Question
Hi there,
Wondering if you could help me. I’m having problems with my 2001 Skoda Octavia VRS. It starts perfect first thing in the morning but when it gets hot it’s really slow to start and when it does get going again it backfires when i’m changing gears. Otherwise it seems to be running ok and there don’t seem to be any other issues with the engine.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Carla, from the above information I’m guessing the car is the 1.8T petrol?
Starting a car requires many factors working properly, so get the battery, spark plugs, coils, leads and coolant temperature sensor checked. If you haven’t had it serviced recently then get this carried out. The starter motor may not work properly if it has got too warm so this could be another reason. The misfire can be caused by faulty spark plugs or coils, a fuel problem can also cause this such as a faulty injector or fuel filter.
You haven’t said if the EML (Engine management light) has come on, if it has then a garage can read the diagnostic trouble codes to get a better idea of what could have gone wrong.
Hope this helps.
Hannah
