First Drive: Mercedes-Benz C220 BlueTEC

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes-Benz has just launched an all-new C-Class Saloon – the German carmaker’s biggest seller worldwide.

What is it?  Aimed squarely at the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 the New C-Class promises to be cheaper to run, better to drive and more comfortable.

First impressions of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class? From which ever angle you view it the C-Class is a very chic car. All the familiar Mercedes design cues are present and this baby saloon of the family is like a miniature S-Class.

What about the interior? Like a day at an exclusive spa, the C-Class is the perfect place to escape the daily grind. Inside it is classy, luxurious  and extremely comfortable. It is also bigger  than the previous model with plenty of space front and back.

And on the road? At the launch we had an opportunity to drive the C220 2.0-litre 170bhp BlueTEC Avantgarde automatic  On the road there isn’t so much as a whisper of road noise inside and it is smooth with plenty of oomph  for effortlessly overtaking. Regardless of road surface it is composed and soaks up bumps, but it’s also really good  if you decide to go via the twisty back roads.

How Much? Available with a choice of two engines and three new model lines, prices for the new C-Class range start from £26,855.

How Safe? Smaller certainly doesn’t mean less safe to Mercedes Benz and the new C Class has a host of safety features normally found on the larger E-and S-Class models including Attention Assist,  a drowsiness detection system and Collision Prevention Assist.  Active parking, adaptive head beam, traffic sign and wrong way alert systems and a 360-degree camera are also available. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class also features pelvis bags, a newly developed window bag, side bags and a driver’s knee bag.

What about my options? There is a choice of three new model lines – SE, Sport and the AMG Line. The Sport model adds 17-inch alloy wheels (up from 16-inch on the SE), LED headlights, lowered comfort suspension, chrome exterior trim and Garmin Map Pilot Navigation. Upgrade to the top of the line AMG for 18-inch AMG wheels, AMG bodystyling and steering wheel, sports suspension and an Artico finish to the upper dashboard.

3 words to describe the Mercedes-Benz C-Class:  Refined; Elegant; Safe
