New technology means cars are harder than ever to steal. So now more and more thieves are targeting the keys to get the car. Make life harder for thieves with our four top tips writes Geraldine Herbert
- Don’t display your car keys in the hallway
If a thief spots them through the letterbox, it’s too easy for them to break in or use a ‘hook and cane’ to get them. But remember if someone is willing to break into your house in order to get to your car keys, it’s better that they find the keys and leave rather than ransacking your home – so it’s preferable to leave them downstairs when you go to bed.
- Never leave your car with the keys in the ignition
While you’re paying for petrol, popping into the shop or simply opening the boot, a thief can easily drive your car away if the keys are still in the ignition.
- Keep your keys with you
Don’t hang up your jacket with your car keys in the pocket: keep them with you and out-of-sight at all times.
- Don’t leave your car running to ‘defrost’
In winter this is one of the most common causes of car theft using the original keys. There’s no need to warm up modern cars, and an ice scraper will do the job just as fast.
